Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee
@iitroorkeeAbout
Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee is Asia's oldest engineering institution — founded in 1847 as Roorkee College (later Thomason College of Civil Engineering) to train engineers for the Ganges Canal, made India's first engineering university in 1949, and converted to an IIT in 2001. Ranked #5 in Engineering by NIRF 2024, its 365-acre campus in the Himalayan foothills hosts ~9,000 students across 22 departments, with historic strength in civil engineering, earthquake engineering (India's premier department), water resources, and architecture, alongside top-ranked CSE and data science programmes. Roorkee's Thomso (cultural) and Cognizance (technical) festivals draw national participation, and its alumni built much of modern India's dams, railways, and infrastructure — a 175-year legacy celebrated across Indian engineering.
