The University of Madras, established in 1857, holds the proud distinction of being the oldest university in South India and one of the first three universities established in India under the British administration. It is an affiliating university encompassing over 140 colleges across Chennai and Tamil Nadu, including many of India's most prestigious arts, science, and commerce institutions. The university operates from two primary campuses — the iconic Chepauk campus in Marina (administrative headquarters and postgraduate departments) and the Guindy campus for science and technology streams. NAAC A++ accredited, the University of Madras offers a vast spectrum of programmes including BA, BSc, BCom, MA, MSc, MCom, LLB, and PhD across humanities, sciences, social sciences, languages, and professional fields. Undergraduate admissions to affiliated colleges are conducted through the CUET or direct merit-based applications, with premier colleges like Presidency College (1840), Loyola College (1925), Madras Christian College (1837), and Women's Christian College drawing thousands of applicants annually. Tuition fees are nominal at ₹5,000–₹25,000 per year for UG programmes at government colleges. The university is home to notable research institutes, the Connemara Public Library, and is architecturally stunning — the Senate House is a national heritage landmark. It has produced eminent alumni including presidents, prime ministers, and Nobel laureates.
